I can’t believe my 2023 wedding season is officially over. To celebrate, I wanted to share with you my favourite 10 images of my career so far as a wedding photographer.
2023 is my first season of wedding photography working exclusively on my own weddings. In 2022, I did a ton of work second shooting for a few of my favourite New Brunswick photographers and I learned so much about the types of images I love to capture, the kinds of weddings that fill my cup, and the clients I want my portfolio to really speak to (spoiler alert – it’s usually the super fun ones)!
This entire wedding was one of the most fun days I’ve been part of. Cailin and Isaac took a less traditional route and had their ceremony Friday night on the walking trail on the south-side of Fredericton by the Bill Thorpe wedding bridge followed by an intimate party with their closest friends at 11th Mile YFC in downtown Fredericton. After speeches, everyone had appetizers and drank and danced and there was so much playful love with all of the people present. Cailin and all her friends were tearing up the dance floor all night and this was one of my favourite photos that really captured her energy and the energy of the entire wedding.
Even without knowing the backstory to this image – it’s so incredibly fun. Niamh and Phil got married on Minister’s Island and they kayaked back to Phil’s parent’s property in Saint Andrews. Seeing the contrast of the elegant but paired-down wedding attire with the bright life jackets is one of the photos that really inspired me to show my couples that there’s no rules to weddings and you can do things that you love and make time for yourselves on your wedding day. Incorporating adventure and untraditional elements is one of my favourite things that a couple can do on their wedding day.
I went to university with Melissa and can say that she’s one of the kindest and most down to earth people that I know. Her and Cameron’s wedding day was one that was so filled with love and laughter and I can hear her laugh every time I see this picture. The genuine joy of marrying her best friend and celebrating with a champagne pop is such a fun moment that I loved to be present for and loved to capture even more.
Kim and Mike had a beautiful wedding at the west hills golf course in Fredericton. The weather was absolutely beautiful and it was the perfect day – filled with so many incredible elements that Kim made herself. This image itself is so intimate, but I love the backstory. Kim and Mike are both so quiet and such gentle people and they are so humble that they didn’t want all of the attention to be on themselves – even during their first dance. The MC asked all the couples in the room to get on the dance floor to join them. Even not knowing most of these people, all the love in the room was so beautiful and got me choked up to see so many people that love their partners so deeply.
This photo was taken a few minutes after Lynn’s father saw his daughter for the first time in her wedding dress. First looks are always so emotional for me, but first looks between father and daughter really hits a cord for me. This photo was taken over the shoulder of Lynn’s mother and sister and it was such a beautiful moment of vulnerability.
Nora, the daughter of the bride and groom, fell into a small bit of water at this backyard ceremony. The little boy in blue and Nora were talking a few minutes before and then I saw her aunt run over and pick her up. Seeing the flower girl in the cutest dress dripping water was one of the funniest moments of my 2022 season that I can’t believe I captured. Moments like this really bring you back to the moment and help you remember the moments of a wedding outside of the posed moments.
Jenn and John are two of the most fun wedding clients I’ve ever worked with. Both of them as well as their entire wedding party were so high-energy, so loving and so so fun. There’s so many pictures from this day that show the kind of day they had – but John lighting a joint before going into dinner is one of my favourites. The lighting is amazing and it really looks like it could be on the cover of an editorial magazine. This is probably my favourite photo of my entire 2023 season.
Dawn and Christian got married at The Barn at the Harvey View Farm – one of my favourite venues in New Brunswick. A lot of my clients don’t have children and it’s so incredibly special to me when the clients who do incorporate their kids into the ceremony and the day itself. A moment that some people might not notice is that Dawn is holding some daisies that her kids picked for her right before we started doing sunset photos. There’s photos of her being handed these daisies and I love that both the flowers and the kids made it into the photos.
First look reactions will always be some of my favourite moments of the day. Amanda, the bride, having a first look with her best friend, mom and step-sisters is such a special photo. The genuine reaction of everyone seeing someone they love looking incredible and getting ready to marry their best friend is so special. Parents having reactions to their children on their big day always gets me choked up.
This photo was taken during the entrance to reception. Having the couple be so excited and show genuine emotions – especially happiness and goofiness is one of my favourite things to capture.
